We were first introduced to Tulliah with her debut EP, Fre$h Hugs (2021), which was defined by seamless, thoughtful production and addictive indie-pop melodies. Fast forward to 2023, and we see a Tulliah who has delved further inwards, and found intimacy exuding out of every corner of her up-and-coming debut album, set for release in mid-2024.
Upon first listening to Tulliah, it doesn’t take long to notice something which stands out from the rest – her voice. This is something Tulliah and her producer Dean Tuza (Stella Donnelly, The Rubens, A.Swayze and the Ghosts) did intentionally, with their motto to “not step on the vocals” shining through on each track. Each word Tulliah sings is drenched in tenderness.
Coinciding with the second folk revival, Tulliah draws upon influences from the endlessly vulnerable Cat Power, and the “frighteningly flawless” Nick Drake. We see her diversify her artistry on her highly anticipated debut album, which is characterised by an assortment of live strings arranged and co-produced by David Khane (Lana Del Rey, Paul McCartney, Stevie Nicks) in New York City. With additional assistance from Rob John (Melbourne Symphony Orchestra), the incorporation of strings feels innate for Tulliah, and is a move which completely alters how her music will be experienced. Paired with her forlorn lyricism, Tulliah has crafted a body of work which is decorated in delicate, considered vignettes, ready to take to renowned theatres internationally.
